Prep for baby during pregnancy

Nesting, a typical end-of-pregnancy experience. Cleaning, washing, buying the tiny things…but did you know you can get ready for breastfeeding at this time too?

Your body begins to make milk in the second trimester, somewhere around week 16 of pregnancy. By the time baby is almost here, you might be able to express a bit of colostrum from your breasts. But why would you want to?

Many babies receive supplementation in hospital for low blood sugar or to help with jaundice, rather than use formula, wouldn’t it be great if you could supplement with your own magical formula? Having a few syringes of this Liquid Gold on hand can be helpful if baby isn’t latching well or mom isn’t able to feed right away for medical reasons.

As a bonus, expressing colostrum prenatally is a wonderful way to get used to hand expression. Most of us aren’t used to handling our breasts in this way, by practicing prenatally, when there isn’t a baby crying to be fed, is a much lower-stakes way to get the hand of this skill!

If this sounds like something you’d like to add to your to-do list, gimme a call. I can help you get on track for the early days of feeding, answer any questions you have, and help you feel confident going into this adventure!
